Weekend in Salida + Royal Gorge

Two days, two Colorado destinations, no wasted time. Day 1 in Salida: arts, hot springs, and dinner at one of Colorado's best small-town restaurants. Day 2 in Canon City: world-class rafting, a rooftop lunch with canyon views, and the zipline.

2-day weekend
Salida + Canon City, CO

Day 1 — Salida

Morning

The Creative District

Start in Salida's downtown Creative District — Colorado's largest state-certified arts district, 14 blocks of working studios, galleries, and independent shops anchored by F Street. Most galleries open by 10am. The SteamPlant Event Center (a converted 1887 steam plant) is worth a look even if you're not catching a show — the building itself is one of Salida's architectural highlights.

Wander east toward the Arkansas River. The Salida Whitewater Park, just downstream from downtown, is a free public wave park where local kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders work the rapids. It's genuinely impressive to watch.

Lunch

Boathouse Cantina

The Boathouse Cantina at 228 N F St has the best outdoor patio in Salida — riverside seating right on the Arkansas River with the Sawatch Range forming the backdrop. Quality Mexican food, house margaritas, and a casual riverside atmosphere. The smoked pork tacos and a house margarita on the patio is a reliable order.

Hours: Daily 11am–9pm. Address: 228 N F St, Salida.
Afternoon

Mt. Princeton Hot Springs (Optional)

Twenty minutes south of Salida on County Road 162 in Nathrop, Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort is one of the finest natural hot spring experiences in Colorado. Multiple geothermally heated pools ranging from 98°F to 105°F sit in the shadow of 14,197-foot Mt. Princeton — with Chalk Creek running alongside. Day pass access includes the pools, and the setting (surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks) is genuinely spectacular.

Book day passes in advance, especially on weekends — it fills up. If you'd rather stay in town, the Salida Whitewater Park is a good afternoon option, or browse the galleries on F Street for a slower pace.

Dinner

Shavano

Shavano at 113 E Sackett Ave is Salida's best restaurant — voted Best Restaurant and Best Dinner Menu at the 2025 Mountain Mail Best of Salida Awards. Seasonal farm-to-table cuisine named for the iconic 14er, with a menu that responds to what Colorado's farms have to offer. It's the kind of meal you don't expect to find in a mountain town of 5,800 people. Reservations are recommended — this place fills up, especially on summer and fall weekends.

Hours: Wed–Sun Dinner from 4:30pm. Address: 113 E Sackett Ave, Salida.

Day 2 — Canon City & Royal Gorge

8:00 AM

Depart Salida — 1 Hour Drive

Head east on US-50 from downtown Salida. The drive follows the Arkansas River through increasingly dramatic canyon country, eventually arriving at the Royal Gorge corridor. Plan to be at Royal Gorge Rafting by 9am for the first morning launch.

9:00 AM

Morning Rafting — Royal Gorge Rafting

Royal Gorge Rafting runs expert-guided trips through the Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas — Class IV–V rapids between 1,053-foot canyon walls. A half-day trip is 3–4 hours on the water and covers the best rapids in the gorge. If you've done Brown's Canyon near Salida, the Royal Gorge steps it up significantly — this is committing whitewater by any standard. All gear included.

Lunch — Rooftop Social

Rooftop Social at 302 Royal Gorge Blvd in downtown Canon City is the best lunch spot after a morning on the river. The rooftop patio has panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and canyon country — exactly the kind of place that makes the adventure feel complete. Craft cocktails, local beers, and a full menu. The atmosphere is elevated without being stuffy.

Address: 302 Royal Gorge Blvd, Canon City, CO 81212. Phone: (719) 451-7241. Hours: Tue–Sun 3pm–close.

Afternoon Zipline — Royal Gorge Zipline Tours

Cap the weekend with the gorge from above. Royal Gorge Zipline Tours runs multiple courses along the canyon rim, with lines soaring 1,200 feet above the floor. The contrast with the morning's river-level perspective is striking — same canyon, completely different experience. Open year-round.

Drive Back to Salida or Head Home

The drive back to Salida is 1 hour west on US-50. If you're heading back to Denver or Colorado Springs, you have options: stay on US-50 west through Salida and over Monarch Pass (beautiful mountain drive), or take US-50 east back through Canon City to Pueblo and I-25 north.

Extend to 3 Days

Add a ski day at Monarch Mountain (20 miles west of Salida on US-50, open Nov–Apr), summit a 14er like Mt. Princeton or Mt. Shavano, or stay another night and repeat the river at Brown's Canyon — the National Monument section just above Salida is a completely different experience from the Royal Gorge. Royal Gorge Vacation Rentals has yurts and Airstreams near the gorge if you want to base out of Canon City.
