Perfect Day Trip from Salida to the Royal Gorge

Flying in? Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is just 1 hour from Canon City — making this day trip possible on the same day you land. Denver International Airport (DEN) is about 2 hours from Canon City.

8:00 AM

Depart Salida

Head east on US Highway 50 from downtown Salida. The drive to Canon City is exactly 1 hour through the dramatic Arkansas River canyon — one of the most scenic highway stretches in Colorado. Royal Gorge Rafting opens early, so leave by 8 AM to catch the first morning launch.

Morning Rafting — Royal Gorge Rafting

The Royal Gorge section of the Arkansas River is the most dramatic commercially-rafted stretch of whitewater in Colorado — Class IV–V rapids between canyon walls rising 1,053 feet straight up from the river. Royal Gorge Rafting runs expert-guided half-day and full-day trips daily through the season (late May through September). A half-day trip covers approximately 3–4 hours on the water, including the best rapids in the gorge. All gear is provided: wetsuit, helmet, paddle, and PFD.

Lunch — WhiteWater Bar & Grill

After getting off the river, WhiteWater Bar & Grill is the first stop every guide recommends — and the most popular lunch spot in the Canon City rafting corridor. Located at 45045 Hwy 50 West in Canon City, it's minutes from the river put-out. The smoked brisket is the move. Cold beer on tap, a full menu of hearty American comfort food, and a lively atmosphere full of guides, locals, and visitors who've all just had the adventure of their lives.

Afternoon Zipline — Royal Gorge Zipline Tours

If rafting gave you the river's-eye view of the canyon, the zipline gives you the hawk's view. Royal Gorge Zipline Tours runs multiple zipline courses along the canyon rim, with the longest lines soaring 1,200 feet above the gorge floor. On a clear day — which is most days in Colorado — you can see the entire canyon sweep, the Arkansas River threading below, and peaks stretching to the horizon. It's open year-round, so this works as a three-season day trip even outside rafting season.

Depart Canon City — Monarch Pass Sunset

Head back west on US-50 toward Salida. The drive takes about an hour. If the timing works, continue 20 minutes past Salida to the summit of Monarch Pass (11,312 ft) for golden-hour views of the Sawatch Range — one of the most sweeping mountain panoramas in Colorado. The Collegiate Peaks, with their row of 14,000-foot summits, light up orange and gold in the setting sun. It's a 40-minute round trip from Salida, and a perfect ending to a full day in the canyon country.
