About

About Salida, Colorado

A historic mountain town in the heart of Colorado's Arkansas Valley — where adventure, art, and authentic community life come together at 7,000 feet.

Salida (Spanish for “exit” or “outlet”) sits at the confluence of the South Arkansas River and the Arkansas River at 7,036 feet elevation, surrounded by the Sawatch Range to the west — home to the highest concentration of 14,000-ft peaks in Colorado.

Founded in 1880 as a railroad hub for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, Salida grew quickly as a regional center for mining, ranching, and commerce. Its beautifully preserved Victorian-era downtown — now listed on the National Register of Historic Places — gives the city a unique character that sets it apart from newer Colorado resort towns.

Today, Salida is known as an outdoor recreation mecca and arts community. The Arkansas River running through town provides world-class whitewater rafting and Gold Medal trout fishing. Three 14ers are within striking distance. And the city's Creative District — Colorado's largest — draws artists, makers, and visitors from across the country.

A Growing Destination

Over the past two decades, Salida has transformed from a quiet railroad town into one of Colorado's most beloved outdoor destinations — while maintaining its authentic character and relatively affordable cost of living compared to mountain resort towns like Telluride, Aspen, or Vail. It's frequently listed among the best small towns in Colorado and the American West.
